Demo Account: How Download Works

See how Espresso demo account download works for Indian traders: what you get, limits, KYC steps, and how to practise before live trading.

Leveraged CFDs can drain an account quickly; most retail traders lose money.

Demo Account: How Download Works

Espresso is the discount-broking brand launched by Sharekhan, backed by BNP Paribas, and its India operations run through Espresso Financial Services Private Limited, headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra. The demo runs inside the same app and desktop platform you will later use for live trading, so it is a practice environment for Indian exchange trading rather than a separate downloadable product. You get the same order types and the same charts, but no real money, and the demo symbols cover equity, F&O, IPOs and ETFs.

How to get started

Step 1

Go to Google Play or the broker's website.

Step 2

Install the app.

Step 3

Register with a mobile number.

Step 4

Choose the demo or practice mode.

Step 5

Verify the OTP.

Step 6

Start placing paper trades.

The whole thing usually takes a few minutes, and you do not need to fund anything to try it. The demo mode sits inside the same app you will use for live trading, and its data stays separate from your live account once you switch.

What the demo does not show

The demo does not show real slippage. It does not show how your order fills during a gap-up open on NSE. It does not simulate the margin calls that come from SEBI's SPAN+exposure margins. The numbers on the demo P&L are therefore cleaner than what you will see live.

Cost structure

The demo is free. When you go live, India pricing is ₹0 for equity delivery and ₹20 flat brokerage on profitable intraday and F&O trades. One broker PDF also states zero account-opening fee and zero AMC.

Platform

Espresso provides app-based and desktop trading platforms. The app is available on Google Play, and the broker is described as offering beta-tested app and desktop platforms.

What the demo cannot teach you

Espresso does not provide stock research or recommendations, and dedicated dealer or trading support is chargeable. The demo is for learning the mechanics of placing orders and reading charts, not for getting trade ideas.

Currency and instruments

The demo account is INR-denominated, since the India offering is INR only. You will see equity cash, futures and options, IPOs, ETFs, and currency/commodity trading on exchange segments. You will not see spot forex or offshore CFD pairs, because the demo is an Indian exchange trading demo.

Regulation

Espresso is presented as an Indian regulated broker, with SEBI and NSE/BSE access. The demo is attached to that Indian entity, not an offshore one.

Risk note

A demo account never loses money, so it never teaches you how losses feel. Use the demo for the mechanics, then start live with small size.

Red Flags

Before you go from demo to live, check these:

  • The brokerage structure: ₹0 delivery, ₹20 flat on profitable intraday and F&O.
  • Research: Espresso does not provide stock research, so if you rely on calls, plan for that elsewhere.
  • Support cost: dealer or trading support is chargeable.
  • Margin: SEBI exchange margins apply on live trades, roughly 3-5% margin on INR currency derivatives.
  • KYC: PAN mandatory, plus Aadhaar, address proof, bank proof; approval is usually 24-48 hours.
  • Account types: demat and trading accounts. No 3-in-1 account is offered.

If your goal is to learn how to place a market order, a limit order, and a stop-loss on an Indian exchange, the Espresso demo does that. If your goal is to learn spot forex or CFD trading with tight spreads and offshore leverage, this demo will not cover it, and for Indian residents spot forex and CFDs with offshore brokers are outside the permitted framework anyway.

For an Indian beginner who wants to understand exchange trading before funding a real account, the demo serves that purpose. For someone who wants a forex demo with 1:500 leverage, this is not the product.

What to remember six months from now

Six months is enough time for the demo phase to end and for the live account to have real trade history. What will matter then is whether the ₹20 flat fee structure stayed predictable, whether the app kept working during market hours, and whether you ever needed dealer support and found out it is chargeable. Those are the things the demo cannot show you. Write them down before you fund.

Questions

Is the Espresso demo account free?

Yes. The demo is free, and the live account has zero account-opening fee and zero AMC per one broker PDF, plus ₹0 equity delivery and ₹20 flat brokerage on profitable intraday and F&O trades.

Do I need KYC to use the demo?

No. KYC is needed to open a live exchange-linked account, where PAN is mandatory plus Aadhaar, address proof, and bank proof. Approval is usually 24-48 hours. The demo runs before that.

Does the demo work on desktop as well as mobile?

Espresso offers app-based and desktop platforms. The app is on Google Play. Both are described as beta-tested, so you can practise on either.

Why does the demo not show forex pairs?

Because Espresso's India offering is INR-denominated exchange trading - equity, F&O, IPO, ETF, and some exchange-listed currency/commodity segments. Spot forex and offshore CFDs are outside the permitted framework for Indian residents.

Is the demo account different from the live account?

Yes. The demo uses paper money and does not show real slippage, gap-up fills, or SEBI margin calls. The live account uses real INR and the same platform, but with real execution.
